New Directions in Structural Mechanics of Muscle Contraction

چکیده
INTRODUCTION When a muscle shortens it must increase in transverse crosssectional area in order to minimize any changes in volume. This increase in cross-sectional area may occur as a bulging in depth or in width. Pennate muscles have structural asymmetries due to the nature of the pennation, and thus may have asymmetries between the bulging in depth or width. Muscle depth can be considered as the distance between the aponeuroses. Increases in the muscle depth cause increases to the fascicle pennation, and this reduces the fascicle shortening velocity and increases the potential for force generation and the gearing of the fascicles. The medial and lateral heads of the gastrocnemius show different bulging characteristics during contraction [1,2], and this may be reflected in differences in gearing.

Effect of Ankle Brace on the Activity and Co-Contraction of Ankle Muscles During Single-Leg Landing
Objectives: The results of a few studies about the effects of ankle brace on muscles function during the performance of different tasks are contradictory. Moreover, the effect of brace on the co-contraction of ankle muscles is undiscovered. Therefore, the present study investigated the effect of brace usage on the ankle muscles activity and co-contraction during single-leg landing. Methods: Fi...
متن کاملThe Effect of Exhaustive Protocol on Knee Muscle Co-contraction in Healthy People and with a Pronated Foot during Running
Background and Aim: Fatigue and abnormalities in the lower extremities, such as the pronated foot, can adversely affect the biomechanics of human movements such as running, leading to a lack of muscle contraction and unstable symptoms in the joints of the lower extremities (knees). Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of exhaustive protocol on knee muscle co-c...

متن کاملBiomechanical basis for lingual muscular deformation during swallowing.
Our goal was to quantify intramural mechanics in the tongue through an assessment of local strain during the physiological phases of swallowing. Subjects were imaged with an ultrafast gradient echo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) pulse sequence after the application of supersaturated magnetized bands in the x and y directions. Local strain was defined through deformation of discrete triangular...
